Our 12 Gems
Kaleidoscope’s 12 Gems reflect the 12 letters of our name. Some are values, while others are practices, orientations, capacities, conditions, or responsibilities. Together, they guide how we learn, relate, make decisions, share power, create opportunities, and build community.
Knowledge
We honour lived experience, community wisdom, culture, research, professional practice, reflection, and dialogue as meaningful ways of knowing. Knowledge means remaining teachable, recognizing whose knowledge is being centred, and using what we learn responsibly.
Authenticity
We create spaces where people can show up with honesty, complexity, and dignity. Authenticity means valuing genuine relationship over performance and not asking people to make themselves smaller, simpler, or more palatable in order to belong.
Liberation
We work to reduce shame, stigma, isolation, coercion, and exclusion. Liberation means strengthening dignity, agency, belonging, choice, and
self-determination while challenging the systems and practices that restrict them.
Emergence
We make room for growth, uncertainty, change, and possibility. Emergence means allowing new direction to develop through listening,
reflection, relationship, experimentation, and collective learning.
Innovation
We create practical, peer-led pathways where existing systems leave gaps. Innovation means responding creatively to community
knowledge, testing new ideas, and adapting what we build as we learn.
Dialogue
We learn through deep listening, honest conversation, reflection, and shared meaning-making. Dialogue makes room for many voices, respectful disagreement, uncertainty, and understanding that can emerge across difference.
Openness
We remain receptive to feedback, new perspectives, collaboration, and change. Openness means sharing information transparently, making space for uncertainty, and being willing to revise our understanding and practices.
Stewardship
We care responsibly for our relationships, resources, community trust, knowledge, and shared future. Stewardship means tending what has been entrusted to us with care, transparency, boundaries, accountability, and respect.
Curiosity
We approach people, ideas, and experiences with humility and a willingness to learn. Curiosity means asking before assuming, exploring complexity, and remaining open to perspectives that may challenge or deepen our understanding.
Opportunity
We create meaningful pathways for people to participate, learn, train, facilitate, lead, work, and contribute. Opportunity means opening doors while also reducing the barriers that can prevent people from moving through them.
Power
We recognize that power is always present in relationships, roles, decisions, resources, and systems. Power means noticing how authority, access, influence, responsibility, and risk are distributed and working to share power with care.
Equity
We identify and reduce barriers to participation, support, learning, leadership, and opportunity. Equity means paying attention to who is included, heard, believed, supported, compensated, and able to influence decisions, then changing our practices so more people can participate with dignity.
